Character & word counter
Paste text to count characters and words — every counting rule is shown, not hidden.
Word count uses Intl.Segmenter word segmentation for this language, so punctuation does not inflate the count. The rule is shown here on purpose: counts can differ slightly from your editor.
- Characters (graphemes)
- Unicode code points
- Lines
- Words
How to use
- Paste your text into the box above.
- Counts update with four explicit rules: grapheme clusters (“visible characters”), Unicode code points, lines, and words.
- Use “Copy counts” to paste the numbers together with their counting rules.
Example
Input
café 👨👩👧 naïve
Counts
Graphemes: 12 · Code points: 16 · Lines: 2 · Words: 2
The family emoji is 1 grapheme but 5 code points (zero-width joiners count); é in “café” may be 1 or 2 code points depending on whether it is precomposed — the grapheme count is unaffected.
Scope and counting rules
- “Characters (graphemes)” counts what a person would see as one character, including emoji and accented letters built from combining marks.
- “Unicode code points” is the programmer-facing count; it is larger than graphemes when combining marks or emoji are present.
- Word counts follow per-language segmentation; languages written without spaces (e.g. Chinese, Japanese) are segmented by dictionary rules, and the method is always disclosed next to the number.
- Counts are computed in your browser; nothing is uploaded.
