Waiting for a PDF
Metadata

Add a PDF and every value it records shows up here.

Drop it on this card, paste it with ⌘V / Ctrl+V, or choose a file. There is no Read button — reading happens the moment the file arrives.

PDF only · one file at a time · up to 50 MB and 2,000 pages.

The file stays in this tab: nothing is uploaded, stored or logged. The page only loads its own PDF engine and, if you ask for it, the sample from this site.

How to use it

  1. Add one PDF: press “Choose PDF”, drop it on the card, or paste it with ⌘V / Ctrl+V. Every value it records appears at once — there is no Read button. Source file, page count and size appear above the panel.
  2. Edit any of the six document-info fields. Empty a field and it is deleted from the file when you save (not written as an empty string). Values are written back as UTF-16 with a byte order mark, so Chinese and Arabic metadata reads correctly everywhere — even if the original was stored in an old code page.
  3. Read the Dates and XMP groups before you change anything. A PDF can carry two copies of the same facts: the classic document info dictionary and an XMP packet. When they disagree the tool says so, and saving syncs the XMP elements that already exist.
  4. Press “Save as new PDF” to write your changes, or “Wipe and save” to remove every info entry, both dates, custom entries and the XMP packet in one step. Both download a new file — your original is never modified.

Example

report.pdf — what it records

Title Quarterly office notes
Author Alice Whitfield
Creator Microsoft Word
Producer Microsoft® Word for Microsoft 365
CreationDate D:20261024091233+08'00'
XMP dc:title Quarterly office notes

After editing and saving

Title kept, Author emptied, Subject emptied →
report-meta.pdf: Title written as UTF-16, Author and Subject keys deleted,
ModDate set to now (D:…Z), XMP dc:title and dc:creator synced.

Wiping produces the same file with every info entry and the XMP packet deleted — the pages, text and images inside are untouched.

Rules, limits and known issues

  • Unencrypted PDFs only: encrypted files (open password or permissions password) are rejected with a clear message, never with an empty result. The tool does not decrypt PDFs.
  • Saving rewrites the file structure: digital signatures stop validating and incremental-update history and linearization are not preserved. The tool warns before you save. Page content, fonts and images are not re-encoded, but object streams are rewritten, so the file size can change.
  • Wiping removes document properties only. Names and other details can also sit in the page text, comments and annotations, form fields, hidden layers and the EXIF of embedded images — none of those are changed.
  • Only six XMP elements are synced (dc:title, dc:creator, dc:description, pdf:Keywords, xmp:CreatorTool, pdf:Producer) plus the modify dates. Elements that are absent from the XMP packet are not added, and the receipt says which ones were skipped.
  • Dates can be shown and wiped but not rewritten at will: saving sets ModDate to the current time (UTC) and leaves CreationDate alone. This tool is not for backdating documents.
  • Limits: one PDF at a time, up to 50 MB and 2,000 pages. Larger files are rejected with the actual size or page count.
  • Text values without a UTF-16 marker are decoded with the “Text encoding” selector (PDFDocEncoding by default). The tool never guesses: if a value is not valid in the selected encoding it falls back to PDFDocEncoding and says so, instead of showing replacement characters.
  • Technical keys are not translated: Title, Author, CreationDate, dc:title and friends match what ExifTool and the Acrobat properties panel show, so you can cross-check with other tools.
