Random team splitter
Drop in a list of names and get balanced random teams — shuffle again until it feels right.
How to use it
- Paste your list of names — one per line, or separated by commas on one line. Blank lines and stray commas are ignored, and each line is kept whole (a name with a space stays one name).
- Choose how to split: “Number of teams” makes that many groups, or “People per team” makes as many groups as needed so no group is larger than that. Pick the team-name style (numbers or letters).
- Press “Split into teams” to shuffle and divide. Press it again to roll a new arrangement; switch the name style to relabel without reshuffling. “Copy all” or “Download .txt” takes the result away.
Example
Input
Alice Bob Charlie Diana Eve Frank Grace Henry
Result (one possible split, 8 names → 3 teams)
Team 1: Alice Bob Charlie Team 2: Diana Eve Frank Team 3: Grace Henry
Names are shuffled, so your split will differ. Groups are balanced: with 8 people into 3 teams the sizes are 3, 3, 2 — they never differ by more than one person.
Scope, limits and common questions
- Balanced only: groups differ by at most one person. There is no “uneven” toggle — an uneven split is strictly less fair, so it is not offered.
- Randomness comes from your browser’s crypto.getRandomValues — a cryptographically strong local shuffle. Nothing is uploaded, stored or put into the URL, and the share button shares the page link only.
- If you ask for more teams than people, the tool makes one team per person and tells you; it will not invent empty teams.
- Names are taken exactly as typed, including duplicates — if the same person is listed twice, they appear twice. The list is never rewritten.
- Only one delimiter is understood (newline or comma). Pasting from a spreadsheet usually lands as one name per line, which is what this tool expects.
